Monsoon has already reached Gujarat, arrived early in Rajasthan and India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued very heavy rain alert for northern states of UP, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh. The downpour this year is also going to be heavy in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, Goa and West Bengal. Heavy spells are also predicted for Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Sikkim and Chhattisgarh. Despite a few short spells and thunderstorms, monsoons are delayed by a week in Delhi, Haryana and NCR.

People look up to the sky for respite from the sizzling summer heat. Rains bring relief from soaring temperatures, but also a set of health and hygiene problems that can assume serious proportions rather quickly in this weather!

Rainy season is notorious for bringing with it a host of viral, fungal and bacterial infections, and with the risk of a third wave looming upon us, coronavirus is almost certain to play havoc in the form of a double whammy! Apart from the common cold and cough, the risk of acquiring vaginal candidiasis increases significantly in women during these humid months. Vaginal candidiasis is a fungal infection caused by yeast.

Yeast is always present in small numbers as a part of your vagina’s natural flora, but the symptoms of vaginal yeast infection appear when there is an overgrowth. Several factors are associated with increased symptomatic vaginal yeast infection in women, including pregnancy, uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, use of oral contraceptives and so on.

The most common symptom of vaginal yeast infection is itching, burning and irritation of vagina. Pain during sex is also very commonly reported symptom. It may sometimes present with an abnormal vaginal discharge. In most cases, the male partner having yeast infection is usually asymptomatic.

Once contracted, yeast infection can be controlled easily by using a good anti-fungal cream and tablets but you must consult your gynaecologist before using them. However, prevention is better than cure, as they say. The best way to prevent vaginal yeast infection is to follow good personal hygiene. Women should bathe twice a day and wash their hands frequently. While showering, women should wash their vagina with lots of water and a good natural intimate wash. Avoid use of scented soaps or cosmetic vaginal wash completely as these may be harsh on your sensitive intimate skin. Afterwards, keep the vagina dry and wear airy, loose cotton undergarments for better hygiene throughout the day. It is recommended to carry intimate wipes in your handbag at all times for emergency use while using public toilets.

So, maintain your complete personal hygiene to enjoy the downpour the fullest.
